The town is at an elevation of about 2,600 feet. This unique area is host to a number of famous annual off-road races, including the Laughlin Desert Challenge, Baja 1000, San Felipe 250, and the Baha 500. These races feature off-road vehicles including buggies, stock VW vehicles, custom fabricated race vehicles and trucks. The course is 69 miles long, featuring four distinct loops.
Supermoto racing has also seen a surge in popularity, attracting both professionals and amateurs. The Stateline Supermoto Challenge featuring motorcycle and quad racing also takes place at Buffalo Bill’s Casino each year. These races are divided into categories depending on how many wheels are on vehicles, as well as driver age classes.
One of the most famous former residents of the town is a man named Pete MacIntyre who owned a gas station near the state line. He began to have trouble making a decent living by simply selling gas, so he resorted to bootlegging to supplement his income. He later became known as “Whiskey Pete,” and he is the person that one of the town’s casinos is named after.
Later, the gas station came under the ownership of a man named Dale Hamilton, who added on to it by building a small restaurant that served lunch, a small casino featuring slots, and an auto repair and towing shop. It later became known as State Line Bar: Slots. He owned the business until the 1970s. Later, other casinos were built across the bridge.
One big attraction to this area is the desert climate, which ranges from lows in the 30s at night in January to an average of a 105 daytime high in July. Summer months normally see triple digits, a true reflection of the central Mojave Desert atmosphere. The town aptly serves as an oasis in an otherwise hot and dry desert area. This town is situated close to one of the edges of an Ivanpah Valley dry lake bed, surrounded by mountains that rise to heights of over 3,000 feet above the valley.
