One of the most famous former residents of the town is a man named Pete MacIntyre who owned a gas station near the state line. He began to have trouble making a decent living by simply selling gas, so he resorted to bootlegging to supplement his income. He later became known as “Whiskey Pete,” and he is the person that one of the town’s casinos is named after.
Later, the gas station came under the ownership of a man named Dale Hamilton, who added on to it by building a small restaurant that served lunch, a small casino featuring slots, and an auto repair and towing shop. It later became known as State Line Bar: Slots. He owned the business until the 1970s. Later, other casinos were built across the bridge.
